In this glossary, we’ve compiled some of the more common terms and concepts used in the game. From early position to the term “backdoor equity,” read on for a complete rundown of some of the most important words and phrases in poker.

The early position refers to the first two or three seats on a full ring poker table. A dealer can be a player or a casino employee. The button is the most profitable seat at a poker table.

The flop is the second betting round in community card games. In Omaha poker, the flop is also called the turn. The flop is comprised of the first two cards in a hand. A player is considered a donk if he bets out of position on the flop.

The ace is the final ace in the deck. This term can also be used to describe a pair of aces. This type of hand is known as an Aces Up. The term “aces up” is often paired with the term “two pair,” meaning a hand that has at least one pair.

The term is also used interchangeably with the term “flat.” Flat is usually used to describe a call. A call is a wager in which a player matches a previous wager. In some instances, a call is made speculatively, meaning that the player believes the hand is good but is unsure of the strength of his opponents’ hands. In poker, a call is often made with the intention of bluffing on the next street.

A hand is cooler when it is beat by a stronger hand. In a tournament, a hand is cooler if it is beaten by a draw. A draw is a situation in which a player needs two consecutive cards to complete the hand. In Omaha poker, a hand is cooler if it has a flush or straight.

A deuce is a card with rank value of two. This is the most common nickname for a deuce. In Omaha, a deuce can be a pair of deuces.

A donk is a weak player. He is typically the weakest player on the table. In a community card game, a donk bet is a bet that is outside of the player’s position on the current street.

A depolarised range is a construction that involves a top x percent of the total holdings. This construction is used to create an effective stack, a smaller stack than the other two in the current hand.

An add-on is a chip add-on that a player may purchase for the tournament. A freeroll is a tournament that does not require a buy-in. A bad beat is a losing hand in a poker game.

A free card is a card that a player is given without making a wager. A blank card is a low-rank card that does not affect the meaningful action.
